Thornton, New Hampshire · White Mountains
A private luxury mountain chalet for up to 12 guests — where old-growth silence meets Scandinavian warmth and every season writes its own story.
About the Retreat
Perched on 5.1 private acres above the Pemigewasset Valley, The Snowy Owl Retreat is not a cabin. It is a considered architectural statement — black standing-seam metal and natural cedar drawn from the mountain itself, floor-to-ceiling glass that makes the treeline part of every room.
Inside, the design owes everything to the Scandinavian tradition of hygge: heated stone floors, a gas fireplace at the center of the great room, handpicked linens, and a kitchen outfitted for a chef. Outside, a 40-foot deck hovers over the canopy. The sauna. The jacuzzi under open sky. The silence, broken only by owls.
This is a private retreat minutes from Loon Mountain, Waterville Valley, and Franconia Notch — yet wholly apart from the world. Arrive with your family, your closest friends, your inner circle. Leave changed.
Amenities
Accommodations
Each space is designed for genuine comfort — luxury linens, thoughtful lighting, and views that greet you before your first coffee.
All three bathrooms feature heated floors, premium tile, spa lighting, designer fixtures, and luxury bath amenities. Every bathroom is a moment, not just a utility.
Entertainment
Five thousand square feet of gathering space isn't complete without a place that makes grown adults argue over who gets to play next. The Entertainment Vault is the retreat's crown jewel — a full basement-level entertainment complex built for the moments that become the stories.
Experiences
December — March
Ski Loon Mountain — 10 minutes away — and return to a jacuzzi steaming against fresh snowfall, the sauna crackling, and a fireplace waiting inside. Winter here is not endured. It is savored.
April — May
The snowmelt fills every brook and gorge. Trails open, waterfalls roar, and the valleys go a dozen shades of green that no photograph fully captures.
June — August
White Mountain summers are rare and fleeting — the air is cool, the trails are clear, and Squam Lake glitters just a short drive away. The deck becomes the center of everything.
September — November
Arguably the most coveted season in New England. The Kancamagus blazes red and amber, summit views stretch to four states, and evenings around the fire pit carry a wood-smoke clarity that only autumn delivers.

Area Guide
The Snowy Owl sits at the center of New Hampshire's most celebrated landscape. Here is what we recommend — curated, honest, and updated seasonally.
10 min · Premier Mountain
The closest major ski area to the retreat. 61 trails, 2,100 vertical feet, and one of the best ski schools in New England. Groomed blues for families, steep glades for experts.
25 min · Family Favorite
A true ski village where the whole mountain is built for families. Excellent terrain variety, ice skating, and a pedestrian village that carries European mountain energy.
35 min · Historic Peak
New Hampshire's most storied ski area — raw, steep, and wildly underrated. Home to the aerial tramway and some of the best expert terrain in the Northeast.
55 min · Grand Resort
NH's largest ski area, beneath the shadow of Mount Washington and the storied Omni Mount Washington Resort. An all-day destination ski experience with Nordic trails too.
15 min · Iconic Loop
The perfect White Mountains introduction — open ledges, 360° summit views, and a manageable loop that rewards in every season. Especially spectacular in October.
20 min · Waterfall Hike
A peaceful riverside trail through hemlocks with cascading pools. Ideal for families or anyone wanting a quiet, forested walk after a day on the slopes.
30 min · 4,000-Footer
One of New Hampshire's 48 peaks over 4,000 feet. A straightforward, rewarding climb to treeline views — tick it off the list from the comfort of the retreat.
35 min · Epic Ridge
One of the finest ridge walks in the Eastern US. Over 2 miles of above-treeline travel linking Lafayette and Lincoln, with unobstructed views in every direction.
40 min · On Golden Pond
The lake made famous by the film On Golden Pond. Pristine, quiet, and beautiful — ideal for kayaking, morning mist paddles, and afternoon swims off granite outcrops.
45 min · Crystal Clear
Routinely ranked among the cleanest lakes in the US. Calm waters, excellent swimming beaches, and a quiet New Hampshire charm that still feels undiscovered.
35 min · State Park
Nestled at the foot of Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park. A perfect afternoon swim spot with the granite face of Profile Mountain reflected in still water.
35 min · Notch Swimming
A serene glacial lake within Franconia Notch, overlooked by the cliffs where the Old Man of the Mountain once stood. Peaceful, photogenic, and rarely crowded.
20 min · Scenic Drive
34.5 miles of undeveloped highway through the White Mountain National Forest — no billboards, no development. Just fall color, covered bridges, and roadside waterfalls.
65 min · Summit Experience
The world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, opened in 1869. Steam locomotives still climb to the summit at 6,288 feet — the highest peak in the Northeast.
35 min · Geology Walk
Two of NH's best natural curiosities — boulder caves formed by glaciers at Polar Caves, and a labyrinthine river gorge you walk through at Lost River. Kids love both.
35 min · Aerial Views
New Hampshire's original aerial tramway. Glide above the treetops to the summit of Cannon and take in views that stretch from Vermont to Maine on a clear day.
12 min · Fine Dining
The White Mountains' most refined dining experience. A chef-driven menu built around New England ingredients, an excellent wine list, and an atmosphere worthy of a celebration.
8 min · Local Favorite
The post-ski lunch destination. Creative smashburgers, craft beer, and the kind of relaxed mountain energy that makes you want to stay for another round.
10 min · Après Staple
A White Mountains institution. House-brewed ales, a roaring fireplace, and a menu anchored in New England comfort food. The place everyone ends up eventually.
18 min · NH Classic
A beloved New Hampshire chain done right. Cozy, consistent, and beloved by locals — hearty food, great cocktails, and the kind of welcoming atmosphere that epitomizes NH hospitality.
15 min · Creative Kitchen
An eclectic gem in Lincoln with globally influenced small plates, great cocktails, and the kind of low-key creative energy that surprises first-timers.
14 min · Craft Beer
A White Mountains craft brewery with rotating taps, laid-back vibes, and picnic tables outside that are perfect for warm-season afternoons. Bring the group.
Guest Reviews
There are places you stay, and places that stay with you. The Snowy Owl is firmly in the second category. We came for a ski weekend and left two days late. The sauna at dusk, the jacuzzi in snowfall — I don't have words that do it justice.
We brought three families together for the first time. Ten adults, two kids, and somehow everyone had exactly the space they needed. The kitchen handled a Thanksgiving dinner without complaint. Exceptional property.
I've stayed in luxury hotels on five continents. The Snowy Owl beats most of them on atmosphere alone. The attention to detail — the linens, the lighting, the espresso machine — signals that whoever designed this place genuinely cares.
